CAD software increases our productivity, improves the quality of our design, improves our communications through documentation, and creates a useable database for manufacturing.
CAD design involves vector-based graphics depicting the objects of traditional drafting, however it involves more than just shapes. As in the manual drafting of technical and engineering drawings, the output of CAD conveys information such as materials, processes, dimensions, and tolerances, according to application-specific conventions. CAD is an important industrial art extensively used in industrial automation, process, and controls engineering.
Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) is the use of computer software to control machine tools and related machinery in manufacturing. This is not the only definition for CAM, but it is the most common. CAM may also refer to the use of a computer to assist in all operations of a manufacturing plant, including planning, management, transportation and storage. The primary purpose of all of this is to create a faster production process with components and tooling with more precise dimensions and material consistency, minimizing waste and reducing energy consumption.
